Dear Asha Patron,

Millions of children in India sleep on the dusty streets, cry from hunger, and live a life we would not dare to live. But there is hope (Asha) if the children can break this vicious cycle with literacy. They can dream for a better life and we can try to ensure that by one hour of our salary or one hour of time. Many dedicated project partners of Asha are changing lives in grass root level every day and they deserve this one hour from all of us. There are 150 million children in need of education, but we can start this mammoth task with 4500 students and 20 projects in all corners of India.
With Warm Regards,
Asha for Education

     Care for the Disabled
Dear Asha Patron,

We don't often reflect about the numerous disabled children in India who live in extreme poverty. It's depressing to think about perhaps the most underprivileged in society - children without means or health. The following organizations which Work An Hour supports, bring hope to such children every day. Please read on!

Astha1
Differently abled children like Sonia who live in the poverty stricken slums of New Delhi rely on Astha for physiotherapy, counseling, speech therapy and even basic toilet training. Thanks to Astha, Sonia is now enrolled in a regular school. Astha also helps families cope with the emotional and financial strain of raising kids with special needs. Their goal is to support 25 such families. Donate Here

Khusbhoo pictures
The child of an alcoholic father, Deepak, could not walk properly, speak, or even hold a pencil. KWS rescued this boy and brought him to specialists. Today with the help of physiotherapy and guided education, Deepak can verbalize his thoughts and run on his feet! Like Deepak, Khushboo Welfare Society has given wings to many more children, mentally and/or physically disabled, and empowered them with education, confidence, and independence. Donate Here.

Asha deepa image
Ram's extremely poor parents couldn't afford to send him to blind school and never thought that their son could make any achievements in life. Asha Deepa School came to his rescue, helped him learn Braille and become independent. Now, he has a newfound confidence and aspires to teach visually challenged persons. Help many other visually challenged children become independent and confident individualsDonate Here.

Star clip Engineering manufactures and exports industrial clips to Germany. The remarkable thing is that children with mental disabilities help in the manufacturing of these clips. SSS institute in Nagpur supports 87 children and, takes care of their every detailed need. From daily tasks (brushing teeth) to vocational training (making rakhis), SSS helps these children depending on their varied levels of disabilityDonate here

$1 Teaches a Student in India for Two Days

It's India Independence Day!
Amazingly, India houses almost 20% of the world's entire population.
But without an education, a child has little hope of competing in that job market, let alone rising from their caste to do something more.
Asha for Education is a 100% volunteer organization providing education to underprivileged children in India.
For them, it only costs about 40 cents a day to put a child in school

The next evolution is thought to be of the human mind. Highly evolved and trained minds are at this very moment unlocking the mysteries of our universe and pushing the limits of what mankind can achieve.  In our high tech world what chance of survival would you give to a 10 year old child who never learned the alphabet? Keeping evolution and survival of the fittest in mind? Can independent India support and protect its underprivileged, disabled or orphaned children? Whose responsibility are they? Should they just 'grow up' and learn to take care of themselves? There are no easy answers!

On this Independence Day Asha for Education asks you to donate what you earn in an hour. This enables us to fund the 20 Projects that continue to educate, house, feed and inspire 4415 children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Let us free these children independence from illiteracy, hard labor and abuse and other evils that our society is still burdened with. Take a Minute. Donate an Hour. Change a Life this Independence Day.

Dear Asha Patron,

India is currently home to 1.21 billion people, out of which 833 million live in rural areas, as per the provisional data from 2011 Census. Education is a fundamental right of any child, whether the child resides in a high profile society or in a remote village. Work an Hour 2011 showcases six projects engaged in providing quality education and providing a safe haven for rural children. We need your contribution to continue supporting their commendable work and to help them expand.

Baikunthapur Tarun Sangha (BTS)

Pradip is in the 2nd year of his Mathematics-Honors program in the University of Calcutta. That is an extraordinary accomplishment, given that he comes from extreme poverty in West Bengal with no access to education. The BTS Patha Bhavan was formed in 1983 and has afforded Pradip - and other children like him - an education, along with nutritional and healthcare support.

Forword

Sudha, the first higher-secondary student from her entire village was branded mentally-challenged but now with the help of FORWORD is teaching and inspiring several children from her village. She and many others studied at the Forword's evening learning centers which aim to reduce dropout rates and helps kids cope with their studies. Since 2003, this project has benefited children belonging to 'lower' castes in 50 remote villages.

Rural Education Welfare and Resource Development (REWARD) Trust

REWARD is a zero-overhead volunteer run organization of teachers, scientists and primary education specialists. 52 teachers have taught 7500 students in 20 government schools in 25 rural villages since 2005. Given that 85% of India's children study at government schools, your donation can help REWARD in ensuring a future where every child is able to receive quality education.

Samata Gram Vikas Saradhi

Educating children who live in remote villages with a 100% illiteracy rate is difficult enough; this organization encourages kids to teach their parents what they have learned. Parents feel excited to be able to read and write; feel proud that it's their children who have taught them and feel indebted to SGVS for this opportunity. 130 children have earned their primary education through SGVS so far, with more students joining every year.

The Tribal Empowerment Public (TEP) School

Vareching(name changed) comes from a physically abusive home, plagued with mental illness and extreme poverty. Against all these odds, he is studying at the TEP School - along with 500 other children - in a remote and impoverished region of Manipur. This education has given him a legitimate chance at life, and helped many other children in similar positions find jobs in the Army, police, and offices in major cities.

Timbaktu Collective- Children Resource Center (CRC)

A global company like DELL has employed Mabu as a software engineer. This was made possible by the English, Computer and mathematics education Mabu received at CRC. Students, who are more interested in crafts work, tailoring and stitching, are taught just that to help them become self-dependent.
