Dear Asha Patrons,

Imagine.....that you walk into a restaurant. You are struck by innocence on the faces of young children, who clean tables and dishes, and also serve you food. Instead of being in school, they work and earn as low as $0.50 per day. They are a sobering reminder of India's 12 million child laborers, who have been deprived of opportunities to learn to read and write. They work in brick kilns, factories, or as sex workers and domestic laborers. Abuse is a reality they live with every day of their lives.

We, at 'Asha for Education' strive to bring about a socioeconomic change in the society by providing education to such children. As intractable the problem of the illiteracy in India may seem, all it takes to bring a change is one little bit of contribution from everyone who had the privilege of being educated. And that is exactly what we are asking of you today as a part of our "Work an Hour" campaign (www.workanhour.org). One hour of your salary as a donation. For the past 14 years in this campaign, small donations from compassionate donors like you have helped Asha for Education put tens of thousands of kids into school in India.

We need your support again this year to make the 15th 'Work an Hour' campaign a success. In 2011 alone, we transformed the lives of more than 50,000 children and our 501 (c)(3) organization earned a 4 star (top) rating from Charity Navigator for 'Financial' responsibility. Please make your contribution and help us bring hope to an underprivileged kid. Remember, One hour--That's all it takes to change a life!

Renew our Independence with Work-An-Hour

Dear Asha Patrons,

You admire our work. You often talk about how you wish to see the India as a developed nation, as country of your dreams. Here's your chance to take a small step towards bringing the much needed societal change.

It takes ~$35 (Rs.1925) to support the education of one child from the "Work An Hour 2012" projects for a year. Of the 4300 students that we are targeting to support, we have so far raised enough to reach only 1,000 students.

As we continue to celebrate India's freedom from the shackles of slavery, You can help our children break free from the shackles of poverty by supporting their education. "One hour of your salary as a donation" ... that is all we ask...today!
Please do your share and help us give hope to the unfortunate. We believe our work is not done until everyone in society have food, shelter & access to education and we want to go towards that goal one hour at a time.

On India's Independence Day : Donate for their Right!

Dear Asha Patrons,

"The service of lndia means, the service of the millions who suffer. It means the ending of poverty and ignorance and disease and inequality of opportunity. The ambition of the greatest man of our generation has been to wipe every tear from every eye. That may be beyond us, but as long as there are tears and suffering, so long our work will not be over." (From the 'Tryst with Destiny' by Jawaharlal Nehru on 15th August, 1947)

Though literacy in India increased from ~15% to ~75% in the 65 years post-independence, India is still home to the world's largest illiterate population. With the 'Right to Education' becoming a law, education is now a birthright of every child in India. But, there are still an estimated 100+ million kids below the age of 15 who are not in school, for whom education remains to be an inaccessible privilege and not their lawful right. We, at Asha strive every day to enroll these kids in school, to make education a reality for them and to give them a hope for a better future.

We realize the magnitude of the problem of illiteracy in India is too large to even comprehend, and we will not be able to reach every last child not in school. But as Aesop said "No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted". We continue to march ahead to serve as many needy kids as we can. Now, in this 2 month long 'Work an Hour' campaign, we are targeting to reach 4300 underprivileged kids from various parts of the country. All it takes for us to be successful in our pursuit is one hour's worth of salary from compassionate donors like you.

On India's 66th Independence Day, August 15th 2012, show us your support and help us attain a peak in the number of donors like we have never before!

Spare a thought ... Spend a minute ... Donate an hour...today!

Warm Regards

Asha for Education in Rural India : Evidence Based Approach

Dear Donor,

Here's a fact that weaves a story of literacy decline in rural India. According to Lant Pritchett, a developmental economist at Harvard university:

  • 94% of children who join school in grade 2 without knowing how to read, will not be proficient in reading at the end of the school year.
  • In grade 3 and grade 4, the odds that the child will not be proficient in reading are at 88% and 77% respectively.

In compliance with 'The Right to Education' Act, such a child in India is promoted class after class with the 'hope' that someday, someone will help the child learn to read.

We, at Asha, strive to be that 'Hope'.

Asha for Education-WAH projects tackle issues and challenges on rural education by motivating children to attend school early on, in pre-primary levels, and by providing supplemental education in primary grade levels. Children in some schools are also provided free books, uniforms, transportation and mid day meals.

Our 2012 WAH projects that make an impact in rural India-

  • Awantika, Madhya Pradesh
  • Balia Gram Unnayan Samiti, West Bengal
  • Mandra Lions Club, West Bengal
  • Mukti Coaching Center, West Bengal
  • Gramya Sansthan, Uttar Pradesh
  • Seva Mandir, Rajasthan

We need your help to give hope to our first generation school goers. Let their hopes not be deferred endlessly to a point where their dreams are denied, and it's too late.

Warm Regards
