Contribute Today July 15 - September 30, 2012 Dear Asha Patrons,  Narrow lanes with clustered and substandard houses, open sewers,  garbage dumps, hordes of mosquitoes, and lack of potable water paint a grim picture of life in India's 'urban poverty pockets'. With an increase in urbanization, India's population in slums more than doubled from 43 million in 2001 to 93 million in 2011 and is expected to add 2 million people every year.     What has Asha for Education learnt about children in slums? Parents are migratory and/or daily wage laborers, and are not motivated to send their children to school. Families are under pressure to withdraw children from school when they see hope for their children to earn $0.50 per day to supplement their earnings. Child rights are not protected. Poverty creates conditions that are ripe for exploitation of children in cities.   Work an Hour (WAH) 2012 projects in slums:   India Sponsorship Committee (ISC): empowers women and protects right of children of migratory workers from brick kilns of Yerawada in Pune, Maharashtra. To overcome language barriers in education, ISC offers support classes to children. ISC has influenced the children such that girls now resist marriage at an early age, and children in general, have shown an improvement in academic performance. Jabala Action Research Organization: is a non formal education school that caters to needs of children in Kalabagan slums, Kolkata, West Bengal. Jabala has identified that mothers are more receptive to providing support to their daughters than the fathers and works with them to overcome barriers to empowerment of girls.   Shishur Sevay: is home to orphaned and abandoned girls in Kolkata, West Bengal, where the girls are nurtured to reach their full potential in life. Girls are happy, connect well emotionally, and three girls qualified for admission in a reputed school this year.   Trinita: promotes sustainable livelihood for children in slums of Kolkata, West Bengal. In the last five years, enrollment into Trinita centers has more than tripled. Hena, a high school student now, once dropped out of school and was re-admitted with support from her teacher. She is a recipient of Asha's after school support program. Click here July 15 - September 30,2012 Dear Asha Patrons,    As we introduced you to our campaign last week, we also gave a good start to our donations in the first week.  Our campaign this year supports projects on rural education, needs of children with disabilities, and children from urban slums.   In addition to living in poverty, children born with physical disabilities or those who are mentally impaired face an additional layer of challenge in their lives.    Efforts from Indian Association for Special Education and Rehabilitation (IASER)  ensure that blind readers can access content in digitized format. The books  are also distributed nationally through the organizations like National Association for the Blind (NAB)   Ashok, age 16 from Pneuma Trust, once exemplified the life of a child born to poor and HIV-infected parents.  His parents passed away when he was 9 years old.  Diffident and timid as a child, Ashok has to his credit a performance in a play at the National School of Drama, New Delhi and received recognition for his talent, thanks to efforts from Pneuma Trust.      Meenakshi from  Militha (a Timbaktu Collective project) was polio-stricken at the age of 8 years.  She was first refused admission into the school due to her disability, but was later enrolled when Militha took the initiative and made her family and school aware of her right to education.   Please give these children and our projects 10 minutes of your time by reading about them here: www.ashanet.org/workanhour. July 15 - September 30, 2012 Dear Asha Patrons,  Asha for Education invites you to join our 15th Annual Work-An-Hour (WAH) Campaign. Work-An-Hour highlights the issue of illiteracy in India to donors worldwide and symbolically requests you to donate an hour (or more) of your salary towards education of underprivileged children. As we introduce you to our projects this year, we would like to first take you on a short journey into the life of Harini, a girl from Work-An-Hour 2011 project. We wholeheartedly acknowledge support from our donors like you for playing a key role in lives of children such as Harini. To learn about WAH-2011 fund utilization, click here.   This year, we showcase thirteen educational projects in our campaign with a fundraising goal of $150,000. Beautiful Cricket Gallery at Andheri Sports Complex

Here are some photos of the Cricket gallery at Shahaji Raje Sports Complex, Andheri-W, Mumbai. Entry is free of cost and there are numerous pictures, replicas, cricket kits, models of Sachin, Rahul, Sunny etc.
It also showcases many items from 1983, 2011 and bats with autographs of all team players. The gallery was inaugurated in Jan 2012 by Sunny Gavaskar

Chokhi Dhani @ Mumbai

Definitely a great place to spend an evening with fly & friends. Its part of the Jaipur Chokhi Dhani and a great place. Food /service & entertainment was great. Ticket (Rs.500 @ Summer 2012) include the Snacks and Dinner. There is Traditional welcome with Tikka and Drum & Welcome Drink (Jal Jira). Snacks include kachori & kadi, sprouts, tea, gul & Bajri ki bhakhri. Food includes dal bati, khichda, kadhi, chaas, malpua etc in traditional style.
I tried my hands on gong and pottery making. Watched Folk dance, Puppet Show, Magic Show etc.(free) Played Nishane Bazi, took camel, horse bullock cart rides (extra charges) and got a head massage, and consulted with an astrologer (free included with tickets). There are Fortune Tellers, Tattoo Painting & Mehandi(Henna) designers, Haat Bazaar(Small Local Market) , Rajasthani Bangle and Kadas Shop ,Toys Shop, Jhulas. Overall a sort and sweet evening outing little away from the busy city.

There was good crowd hanging in the Andover square and live music so I decided to try out Palmers. We bought the Groupon which gave us one appetizer, 2 entrees and a dessert.
